Boi-1da is undoubtedly one of Canada’s most sought after producers for the 21st century. His sure-fire talent and proven ability to create hits has led him to the top of the ranks in an industry where nothing is guaranteed.
Born Matthew Samuels, the Ajax native began producing at the age of 15. With no musical background but playing his keyboard and having a passion for music, he was unaware that his hobby in creating beats would soon become his career. An introduction to production software, Fruity Loops, allowed the young prodigy to heighten his skills and explore his creativity. It was not until 2006 that Boi-1da would showcase his talent to the city of Toronto when he entered Battle of the Beatmakers – Canada’s Official Producer Competition. He mastered the competition, winning in different categories for three consecutive years and later went on to become an official judge.
Boi-1da’s versatility when producing has led him to work with a broad spectrum of artists. His first single was a collaboration with Young Tony and Aristo on “East Meets West.” Recognition through Battle of the Beatmakers then led him to partner with many of Toronto’s own including Rochester, Richie Sosa, Andreena Mill and Point Blank. In 2008, 1da collaborated with Kardinal Offishall on his critically acclaimed album, Not 4 Sale, producing four major hits for the record. In the same year he produced G-Unit’s “Red Light, Green Light.” Much of Boi-1da’s recognition as a producer has come from working with long-time friend, Drake.
His current hit production, “Work” by Rihann ft by Drake, shows the variety of his work as he connects us to his youth in this dancehall style vibe. His production catalogue also includes the likes of Eminem, Jay Z, and Kendrick Lamar, who recently won a Grammy for the hit album “”To Pimp a Butterfly.” This Grammy winning producer has does not seem to be slowing down but continues to evolve in his craft.
From humble beginnings to a skyrocketing career as a producer, Boi-1da is just getting started. He is currently working with various artists both domestically and internationally, in genres from hip-hop to pop. At age 29, Boi-1da has become the epitome of what a producer should be, working for his success and inspiring generations to come.
