IMSTA Bulletin - June 2007
In an effort to improve the quality of our print advertisements, we hereby launch the 2007 IMSTA Ad Competition. Any one can enter and if you win you can even earn some cash. The ad should communicate our central message - buy the software you use - in an effective and interesting way. You can write ads in any language and deliver them produced or in sketch form. Jörg Beckmamm is coordinating the competition and you can send him your ad by email. The executive board will select the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. For the winners there are cash prizes - 1st prize is $1,000, 2nd is $500 and 3rd is $250. We need to receive your ad by August 31, 2007 and the winning ads will run in most industry trade magazines like Electronic Musician, Keyboard, EQ, Remix, Mix and others. We are looking forward to receiving entries from the creative departments of our members. For more details, download the Ad competition PDF here.

The fourth annual global PC software piracy study found that the global piracy rate remained 35% which translates to $40 billion in losses to software companies. The study found that some progress was made in tough countries like Russia and China but emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe did not improve. For example, these areas accounted for 33% of PC shipments but only 10% of software. Some piracy rates are staggeringly high with Eastern Europe topping the list at 68% and Latin America [66%], Middle East [60%] and Asia-Pacific [55%] not far behind. Music software piracy rates tend to be higher than the general rates because the bulk of purchasers are private individuals and small businesses who tend to use more pirated software than big businesses. MEMBER PROFILE: Joe Perry - Publisher of Electronic Musician

Joe Perry in his Atlanta-area personal studio chilling in IMSTA blue.
As publisher of EM, one of the most respected trade magazines, Joe Perry is no stranger to the music software community. Joe has been one of the strongest supporters of IMSTA from the beginning. He has attended virtually all of our meetings and run many of our advertisements. We sat down with Joe recently to chat about work, music and piracy. Joe, a guitarist since his teenage years, fully identifies with IMSTA's message and approach. He is amazed there are still some software companies who have yet to join IMSTA. We salute Joe and his publications - EM, Remix and Mix- for their continued support. Read the full interview here.
DON'T CRAC[K] PARTNERSHIP: Let's talk piracy

We are very proud to announce that we have partnered with a company called DontCrack.com that actively fights against piracy. The name says it all. DontCrac[k] wants to encourage fair use of software because developers need to be strongly supported to continue creating great products. Visitors will enjoy finding tons about audio software on a single site.
As part of our partnership, DontCrac[k] has offered great online visibility of our message through banner advertising on targeted audio sites such as the MacMusic/440Network and others. This association is natural and we expect many end-users and professionals to come into contact with our message. DontCrac[k] has also offered to host a forum under the name "IMSTA - Buy The Software You Use" where visitors, end-users and manufactures can have useful conversations about licenses and copyrights issues as well as suggest constructive ideas on how to reduce the use of cracked software and much more. Please visit our new forum here.
ON THE WEB: Companies who have added the IMSTA badge to their web sites.

We don't ask that much of our members but one thing we do ask is to place an IMSTA badge on your website. We are trying to put our slogan in front of as many eyeballs as possible and we need your help in this regard. This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways you can help us fight piracy. Contact the person(s) who manage your website, point them to our badge online - we have it in 8 languages - download the badge and put it on your site with a link back to www.imsta.org. It's simple, it's easy and you CAN do this right now. Let's get your company's name on the list. Not yet a member? Put the badge on your page anyway to show solidarity. Help us fight piracy.
MEMBERSHIPS: Join Up, Pay Up and Do Your Part
|
|
IMSTA is the best and only advocacy program the music software industry currently has for fighting piracy. We are fighting piracy on levels that go beyond the obvious. We are trying to change behavior. In order to do this we need a few simple things done by tens of thousands of people - yes, you are one of them. To start, we need you to join IMSTA. To do this fill out our Membership Application Form. Next we do need you to pay your membership dues for 2007. This is a small but vital contribution that you will make to our campaign. We use your money to pay for the things that we can't get volunteers to do. If you haven't paid yet, please do it now. Finally, we need you to begin the process of implementing the program in the Industry Member's Guide. For starter, put the IMSTA Badge on your website. This is as easy as 1, 2, 3. One thing for sure is that we cannot succeed without you. |
See you next month.
